What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a treatment from traditional Chinese medicine in which very thin needles are inserted into specific points on the body to promote natural healing.

From an Eastern medical perspective, acupuncture stimulates the flow of Qi and blood throughout channels called meridians in the body. It also supports the balance of yin and yang.

From a modern medical perspective, acupuncture appears to affect the nervous system in several ways:
-
Stimulates nerves, muscles, and connective tissue, which can change how pain signals are processed
-
Triggers the release of natural pain-relieving chemicals, including endorphins and other neurotransmitters
-
Influences areas of the brain involved in pain perception and stress
-
Promotes relaxation and reduces stress and anxiety

Acupuncture has also been shown to have immune-modulating, anti-inflammatory, and hormone balancing effects.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Acupuncture needles are extremely thin. You may feel a tiny prick or mild sensation like tingling, warmth, or a dull ache as the needles are inserted, but it is generally a painless and highly relaxing experience.

Is it safe?
Acupuncture is very safe when performed by a licensed, certified practitioner using sterile, disposable needles.
Side effects are generally mild and may include:
-
Minor bleeding or bruising
-
Temporary soreness
-
Lightheadedness
